Human Biology Lab Bootcamp

HMB Lab Bootcamp Opportunity

What is HMB Lab Bootcamp?

The Human Biology Lab Bootcamp is an intensive two-week wet and dry lab training program offered annually in early May.

Open to senior students in any HMB program, the Bootcamp provides hands-on research experience, technical skill development, and guidance for students considering careers in biomedical research or related fields.

Explore program details and how to get involved.

Program Background:

The Bootcamp was developed to address the need for earlier and more accessible research training for undergraduates in the life sciences. It was created by Professors Colleen Dockstader and Melanie Woodin with support from an Ontario government grant, and has been offered annually since 2018.

What the Bootcamp Offers:

Hands-On Laboratory Skills:

Students spend two immersive weeks learning the fundamental wet and dry lab skills that are often not taught until graduate school. Activities cover:

  • Molecular biology techniques

  • Animal cell culture

  • Microscopy

  • Working with laboratory equipment, chemicals, and biological materials

  • Data analysis and scientific communication

Students work in teams to design and carry out a simulated research project. For example, in the past students have investigated the role of specific proteins in neuronal function and comparing protein levels across healthy and diseased brain tissue. To read more about student experiences and outcomes from the Human Biology Lab Bootcamp, see this article.

Carreer Development & Mentorship

In addition to lab work, students participate in sessions led by faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and industry professionals. These sessions provide guidance on:

  • Research career pathways

  • Graduate school preparation

  • Industry opportunities for life science students

  • Academic planning and skill development

Many students report that the program boosts their confidence, helps them clarify career goals, and strengthens applications for research jobs or further study.

Why Participate?

The Bootcamp helps students:

  • Gain confidence working in laboratory settings

  • Build essential technical and analytical skills

  • Explore whether research or graduate school aligns with their goals

  • Receive personalized academic and career guidance

  • Understand diverse career paths in science
